Seeing a doctor as a visitor
Private care is accessible and affordable, but the routes in are different from what most Americans expect.
Most visitors do not need insurance to see a doctor here. Private consultations are commonly paid for directly, by card, at a price that surprises people arriving from the United States.
What takes longer to work out is which door to use. The distinction between a consultation practice, an urgent care centre and a hospital emergency department matters more than it does at home, because walking into the wrong one costs you hours.
Which door to use
- Non-urgent illness
- A private consultation practice, booked for the same week.
- Tonight, not life-threatening
- A private urgent care centre with posted opening hours.
- Chest pain, severe injury, difficulty breathing
- A hospital emergency department. Go directly.
Practical notes
- Bring your passport — clinics ask for identification at registration.
- Ask for the consultation fee before you book. Reputable practices quote it without hesitation.
- Prescriptions are filled at pharmacies, which are plentiful and often open late.
- Confirm English support when booking rather than on arrival.
Where we would start
Consultorio Médico Alameda
The most reliable place we know to see an English-speaking GP within a few days without insurance paperwork.
Why it made the cut
Urgencias Aburrá
Where we would go at 9pm with a bad cut or a fever — not where we would go with chest pain.
