Road descending from the airport plateau toward the Medellín valley
The international airport is not in Medellín. It sits on a plateau near Rionegro, and getting to the city means a descent of roughly 45 minutes in light traffic and considerably more when it is not.
There are three realistic options and the right one depends on when you land, how much luggage you have, and whether this is your first arrival.
The three options
- Official airport taxi
- Fixed rate from the rank outside arrivals. Fine in daylight with hand luggage.
- Pre-booked private transfer
- Costs more. Driver meets you inside with a name board and tracks the flight.
- Rideshare
- Cheapest, but pickup rules at the airport change and the meeting point can be unclear on a first arrival.
Before you land
- Have your accommodation address written down in Spanish, including the neighborhood.
- Expect a toll on the road into the city — confirm whether your fare includes it.
- Withdraw cash inside the terminal only if you need it; card acceptance in the city is good.
- Do not agree to a ride from someone who approaches you inside the terminal.
