Bar at Bodega Treinta

Our take

Wine by the glass in this city is usually a decision made by a distributor rather than by anyone in the room. Bodega Treinta is one of the few places where somebody is clearly choosing, and where the person pouring can tell you why. It works best as the second stop of an evening — small room, late hours, food that supports the drinking rather than the other way round.

Why it made the cut

  • The by-the-glass list is genuinely rotated, not a fixed house pour.
  • Staff can talk about what they are pouring without reading a card.
  • Open late enough to be useful after dinner elsewhere.

The trade-off

It is small and loud after 9pm, and the food is a supporting act. Do not plan dinner around it.

Clínica Dental Nogal

Manila · Dentist · $$

The one to call when you want the plan explained in English before anyone touches your teeth.

  • English spoken
  • Written quotes
  • Routine + restorative
  • Card accepted
Why it made the cut
  • Both practising dentists hold conversational-to-fluent English and explain treatment plans before starting work.
  • Written quotes are given in advance, itemised, and held for 30 days.
  • Sterilisation protocol and equipment were visible and current when we visited.
  • They decline work outside their scope and refer out rather than improvising.

The trade-off: Appointments are booked one to two weeks ahead and they do not run an emergency line after 6pm. If you have acute pain tonight, this is not the number to call.

Mesa Quince

Laureles · Colombian · $$$

Come here when dinner matters and you want it to be Colombian.

  • Reservations essential
  • Short changing menu
  • $$$
  • English menu available
Why it made the cut
  • The short menu is a real constraint, not a marketing line — dishes come off when the ingredient does.
  • Consistent across four visits spread over eight months.
  • Service handles a table of visitors without switching to a tourist script.
  • Prices are Laureles prices, not Poblado prices.

The trade-off: Twelve tables and no walk-ins after 8pm on weekends. If you have not booked, you are not eating here on a Friday.

El Poblado · Restaurant · $$$$

The date-night booking that still works when the occasion is real.

  • Courtyard seating
  • Book ahead

  • Wine list
Why it made the cut
  • The courtyard is genuinely quiet enough for a conversation, which is rare in this part of the city.
  • Grill work has been consistent across three visits.
  • They hold reservations and seat on time.

The trade-off: It is expensive by Medellín standards, and the wine markup is where the bill grows. The indoor room is far less pleasant than the courtyard — ask when you book.
